    <abstract>Abbreviations are an entrenched feature of the majority of the world’s writing systems, and the ability to expand abbreviations in context is important for speech technologies and language understanding tasks. This study presents several experiments applying large language models, prompt engineering, and fine-tuning to the expansion of ad-hoc abbreviations in English, showing substantial improvements against noisy channel models previously used for this task.</abstract>
