    <abstract>This paper proposes a new encoding of relative clauses compatible with the Universal Dependencies annotation scheme for syntactic treebanks. After showing that the current guidelines are based on the main strategy of relativization in European languages, we show that it cannot be easily extended to other relativization strategies, especially head-internal relatives clauses. The criteria for the POS of relativizers are discussed. We apply our annotation to an important variety of strategies in Mandarin, Japanese, Bambara, German, Basque, Turkish, Latin, Beja, Gbaya, and Wolof, as well as to various strategies in English, including participial clauses</abstract>
