This paper presents a comparative literature review on the Discourse Signals (DSs) of Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) across six languages. The analysis demonstrates that coherence signaling is not universal, depending heavily on linguistic typology and textual modality. It becomes evident that typologically distant languages and new modalities require profound structural, syntactic, and hypertextual adaptations of the theory’s original taxonomy.
