Visually Rich Document Understanding (VRDU) has become a pivotal area of research, driven by the need to automatically interpret documents that contain intricate visual, textual, and structural elements. Recently, Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have demonstrated significant promise in this domain, including both OCR-based and OCR-free approaches for information extraction from document images. This survey reviews recent advances in MLLM-based VRDU, highlighting emerging trends and promising research directions with a focus on two key aspects: (1) techniques for representing and integrating textual, visual, and layout features; (2) training paradigms, including pretraining, instruction tuning, and training strategies. Moreover, we address challenges such as data scarcity, handling multi-page and multilingual documents, and integrating emerging trends such as Retrieval-Augmented Generation and agentic frameworks. Our analysis offers a roadmap for advancing MLLM-based VRDU toward more scalable, reliable, and adaptable systems.

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) can achieve strong answer accuracy on multi-hop questions, but outcome-level rewards often leave reasoning traces weakly grounded and difficult to audit. Under noisy retrieval, models may exhibit right-answer-wrong-reason failures, where the final answer is correct but the supporting rationale exploits shortcuts or unsupported evidence. We therefore ask whether faithfulness-guided alignment hurts answer accuracy in post-retrieval reasoning. To study this question, we propose CRAFT (Calibrated Reasoning with Answer-Faithful Traces), a reinforcement learning framework for the response-generation stage of retrieval-augmented multi-hop question answering. CRAFT trains models to produce structured reasoning traces with configurable auditability, while combining deterministic rewards for format compliance, answer correctness, and citation validity with a judge-based reward for semantic faithfulness. Experiments across model scales and benchmarks show that CRAFT unlocks task-specific reasoning capacity from 1.5B upward, improving both answer accuracy and Faithfulness; at 0.5B, performance remains sharply template-dependent. At 7B, CRAFT improves Faithfulness over the Base model in all evaluated settings and remains competitive with strong closed-source models. Code is available at https://github.com/Ameame1/CRAFT.

Mineral exploration requires integrating heterogeneous geochemical, geophysical, and geological evidence, yet existing prospectivity systems often provide only opaque scores or heatmaps. We present MineTRACE, a web-based system for evidence-grounded exploration of eight commodities: Cu, Au, Ni, W, Sn, Co, Ta, and Mn. Users can explore prospectivity maps, query locations or regions, inspect supporting evidence, and interact through natural language. A transparent expert tree, informed by geological knowledge and known deposits, combines multi-source evidence into interpretable prospectivity scores. For a new location, the conversational assistant retrieves the score and supporting evidence from the analysis pipeline and presents them in natural language. The scorer achieves spatial AUC values of up to 0.917 across different test scenarios, while end-to-end evaluation assesses query accuracy and response grounding. MineTRACE makes public geoscience data easier to access, interpret, and verify, supporting more efficient and transparent mineral exploration. Acquiring structured data from domain-specific, image-based documents—such as scanned reports—is crucial for many downstream tasks but remains challenging due to document variability. Many of these documents exist as images rather than as machine-readable text, which requires human annotation to train automated extraction systems. We present DocSpiral, the first Human-in-the-Spiral assistive document annotation platform, designed to address the challenge of extracting structured information from domain-specific, image-based document collections. Our spiral design establishes an iterative cycle in which human annotations train models that progressively require less manual intervention. DocSpiral integrates document format normalization, comprehensive annotation interfaces, evaluation metrics dashboard, and API endpoints for the development of AI / ML models into a unified workflow.Experiments demonstrate that our framework reduces annotation time by at least 41% while showing consistent performance gains across three iterations during model training.By making this annotation platform freely accessible, we aim to lower barriers to AI/ML models development in document processing, facilitating the adoption of large language models in image-based, document-intensive fields such as geoscience and healthcare. The system is freely available at: https://app.ai4wa.com. The demonstration video is available: https://app.ai4wa.com/docs/docspiral/demo.

Multimodal conversational agents are highly desirable because they offer natural and human-like interaction. However, there is a lack of comprehensive end-to-end solutions to support collaborative development and benchmarking. While proprietary systems like GPT-4o and Gemini demonstrating impressive integration of audio, video, and text with response times of 200-250ms, challenges remain in balancing latency, accuracy, cost, and data privacy. To better understand and quantify these issues, we developed OpenOmni, an open-source, end-to-end pipeline benchmarking tool that integrates advanced technologies such as Speech-to-Text, Emotion Detection, Retrieval Augmented Generation, Large Language Models, along with the ability to integrate customized models.OpenOmni supports local and cloud deployment, ensuring data privacy and supporting latency and accuracy benchmarking. This flexible framework allows researchers to customize the pipeline, focusing on real bottlenecks and facilitating rapid proof-of-concept development. OpenOmni can significantly enhance applications like indoor assistance for visually impaired individuals, advancing human-computer interaction. Our demonstration video is available https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaSiT3clWqY, demo is available via https://openomni.ai4wa.com, code is available via https://github.com/AI4WA/OpenOmniFramework.
