It is possible that expectation-based latency in reading time is caused by mechanistic latency in changing internal activation states to match observations; this is a primary motivation for predictive coding models (Ohams et al., 2026). This paper explores measurement of sentence processing effort that is based on the gradient signals of transformer language models during error backpropagation: the 2-norm of the gradient of surprisal w.r.t. the output of intermediate layers, i.e., the norm of the error terms at intermediate layers. Regression experiments on multiple human reading time datasets show that the norm of error terms at the output of intermediate layers of GPT-2 small add predictive power beyond baseline predictors including standard surprisal from the same model.

Humans deal with temporary syntactic ambiguity all the time in incremental sentence processing. Sentences with temporary ambiguity that causes processing difficulties, often reflected by increase in reading time, are referred to as garden-path sentences. Garden-path theories of sentence processing attribute the increases in reading time to the reanalysis of the previously ambiguous syntactic structure to make it consistent with the new disambiguating text. It is unknown whether transformer-based language models successfully resolve the temporary ambiguity after encountering the disambiguating text. We investigated this question by analyzing completions generated from language models for a type of garden-path sentence with ambiguity between a complement clause interpretation and a relative clause interpretation. We found that larger language models are worse at resolving such ambiguity.

We propose a novel knowledge grounded dialogue (interview) dataset SPORTSINTERVIEW set in the domain of sports interview. Our dataset contains two types of external knowledge sources as knowledge grounding, and is rich in content, containing about 150K interview sessions and 34K distinct interviewees. Compared to existing knowledge grounded dialogue datasets, our interview dataset is larger in size, comprises natural dialogues revolving around real-world sports matches, and have more than one dimension of external knowledge linking. We performed several experiments on SPORTSINTERVIEW and found that models such as BART fine-tuned on our dataset are able to learn lots of relevant domain knowledge and generate meaningful sentences (questions or responses). However, their performance is still far from humans (by comparing to gold sentences in the dataset) and hence encourages future research utilizing SPORTSINTERVIEW.
